Culture and Community Engagement Drive SGBV Awareness Across IDP and Host Communities

Dessie/Kombolcha — July 21, 2026: As part of its community engagement strategy to strengthen the prevention of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), SYGE, in collaboration with the South Wollo Traditional Music Band, organized a series of public edutainment events targeting internally displaced persons (IDPs), host communities, youth, women, and other community members. The activities, held on July 20–21, 2026, combined traditional music, drama, interactive discussions, and educational messages to make SGBV prevention information more accessible, engaging, and relevant to local communities. The initiative used cultural expression as a platform to address sensitive issues surrounding SGBV and encourage communities to take an active role in prevention. By integrating education with entertainment, the events created an environment where participants could learn, ask questions, share experiences, and discuss practical ways to prevent violence. Community Events Reach Multiple Locations On July 20, public edutainment activities were conducted at Gerado IDP centers, Gerado Monday Market, and the Piazza area of Dessie town. The following day, July 21, similar activities were held at Degan IDP centers, Degan town, and the Piazza and Bus Station areas of Kombolcha town. The selection of venues enabled the project to reach both displaced and host-community populations in locations where large numbers of people regularly gather. The events featured a range of interactive activities designed to communicate key SGBV prevention messages in an accessible manner. Drama performances presented realistic situations illustrating the consequences of SGBV and emphasized the importance of prevention, reporting, and collective action. The South Wollo Traditional Music Band performed traditional music and cultural shows, attracting large audiences and creating an energetic and welcoming atmosphere for community participation. The use of familiar cultural forms helped make the awareness messages more relatable to participants. Interactive question-and-answer sessions provided community members with an opportunity to engage directly with facilitators, clarify misconceptions about SGBV, and share their views and reflections. Thousands Reached through Cultural Edutainment The activities successfully reached thousands of community members, including IDPs, host-community members, youth, and women. Participants demonstrated strong interest and active engagement throughout the events. The activities contributed to increased awareness of SGBV, its consequences, and the importance of collective responsibility in preventing violence. Participants also gained opportunities to discuss harmful attitudes and practices and explore the role individuals and communities can play in creating safer environments. The strong community turnout and participation demonstrated the effectiveness of cultural edutainment as a community mobilization and awareness-raising approach. By bringing together traditional art, entertainment, and social advocacy, the events created opportunities for meaningful dialogue while reaching audiences that may not always engage with conventional awareness activities. Strengthening Community Ownership The successful implementation of the events highlighted the value of working with local cultural actors to address sensitive social issues. The collaboration with the South Wollo Traditional Music Band demonstrated how traditional music and creative expression can be effectively integrated into humanitarian and protection programming. Beyond delivering information, the edutainment activities encouraged communities to see SGBV prevention as a shared responsibility. The participatory nature of the events helped foster dialogue, strengthen community ownership, and encourage individuals to contribute to prevention efforts. Looking Ahead The July 20–21 edutainment activities demonstrate the potential of innovative, culturally appropriate approaches to strengthen SGBV awareness among both IDP and host communities. The strong turnout and active participation indicate that combining education with entertainment can help sustain community interest and make sensitive protection messages easier to understand and discuss. Moving forward, continued use of community-based and culturally relevant awareness approaches will be important for sustaining SGBV prevention efforts, strengthening community resilience, and promoting collective responsibility for protection. Overall, the activities reaffirmed the power of culture and creativity in addressing sensitive social issues. By bringing communities together through music, drama, dialogue, and education, the initiative not only increased awareness of SGBV but also encouraged communities to participate actively in building safer, more inclusive, and violence-free environments.

Schools Strengthen SGBV Prevention through Gender Clubs and Student-Led Action

Efforts to prevent Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) among children and young people have been strengthened through the distribution of Gender Manuals to two schools located near internally displaced person (IDP) communities. As part of its SGBV prevention activities, SYGE distributed Gender Manuals to Tinijut Amaba Primary School, located near the Gerado IDP Center, and Arabo Primary School, situated close to the Degan IDP Center. The intervention aims to establish and strengthen school gender clubs that will provide students with opportunities to participate in awareness-raising, peer education, and collective action to prevent SGBV. The Gender Manual is a key project resource designed to guide schools in organizing and managing gender clubs. It provides practical guidance on student participation, leadership responsibilities, awareness campaigns, gender equality, and mechanisms for reporting and responding to violence. The resource is intended to help schools integrate SGBV prevention into their regular educational and community engagement activities. The two schools were strategically selected because of their proximity to IDP communities. Through this approach, the project seeks to ensure that both displaced and host-community students have access to information, awareness activities, and safe spaces that promote protection, equality, and respect. Creating Safe Spaces for Students The establishment of gender clubs is expected to provide students with safe platforms to discuss issues related to gender, violence, discrimination, and harmful social norms. Through these clubs, students will be encouraged to identify harmful practices, promote positive attitudes, and support their peers in building safer school environments. The clubs will also encourage students to take active leadership roles as peer educators and advocates for change. By equipping young people with knowledge and practical skills, the project aims to strengthen their capacity to share key messages on SGBV prevention with their peers, families, and surrounding communities. Strengthening School and Community Engagement Beyond raising awareness among students, the initiative is expected to strengthen collaboration between schools and the wider community. Gender clubs can serve as a link between students, teachers, parents, and community members in promoting gender equality and preventing violence. The project also seeks to contribute to a culture in which students feel empowered to speak about protection concerns and understand available mechanisms for reporting and responding to cases of violence. Building Sustainable SGBV Prevention Mechanisms The distribution of Gender Manuals and establishment of school gender clubs represent an important step toward institutionalizing SGBV prevention within educational settings. Rather than relying solely on one-time awareness activities, the intervention provides schools with practical tools and structures that can support continued student engagement. Through sustained support and collaboration with schools, communities, and relevant stakeholders, the gender clubs are expected to contribute to long-term changes in attitudes and behaviors related to gender equality and violence prevention. Project Outlook The initiative demonstrates the importance of investing in young people as active participants in community protection and SGBV prevention. By creating opportunities for students to lead awareness activities and support their peers, the project is laying the groundwork for sustainable, youth-led prevention efforts. Moving forward, continued engagement with school administrations, teachers, students, communities, and other stakeholders will be essential to strengthening the functionality of the gender clubs and ensuring that the initiative delivers lasting benefits. Overall, the distribution of Gender Manuals to Tinijut Amaba and Arabo Primary Schools marks a significant milestone in the project’s efforts to promote safer, more inclusive, and empowering learning environments for both displaced and host-community students. The initiative reinforces the role of schools as important platforms for protecting children and young people and for building communities free from Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.

Strengthen, Support, and Establish Gender School Clubs

One of the key activities designed to prevent SGBV prevalence was the distribution of Gender Manuals to nearby schools, with the aim of establishing and strengthening school gender clubs. These clubs serve as platforms for students to engage in awareness-raising, peer education, and collective action against SGBV within school compounds and surrounding communities. The Gender Manual is a pivotal resource, providing structured guidance on how schools can organize and operate gender clubs in alignment with national and community-level efforts to prevent SGBV. It outlines strategies for student participation, leadership roles, awareness campaigns, and mechanisms for reporting and responding to cases of violence. During the reporting period, manuals were distributed to: Tinijut Amaba Primary School, located near the Gerado IDP center. Arabo Primary School, situated close to the Degan IDP center. These schools were selected strategically due to their proximity to IDP communities, ensuring that both displaced and host community students benefit from the initiative. The establishment of gender clubs in these schools is expected to: Provide safe spaces for students to discuss and challenge harmful norms. Promote gender equality and respect among peers. Strengthen school-community collaboration in preventing SGBV. Empower youth to act as peer educators and advocates for change. Final Remark The establishment and support of school gender clubs mark a significant step toward institutionalizing SGBV prevention within educational settings. By equipping schools with practical tools and structured guidance, SYGE has laid the foundation for sustainable, student-led initiatives that extend beyond the classroom into the wider community. These clubs will not only raise awareness but also foster a culture of accountability, resilience, and empowerment among young people. In conclusion, the distribution of Gender Manuals and the creation of gender clubs represent a transformative investment in youth leadership and community protection. With continued support and collaboration from schools, communities, and stakeholders, these clubs will serve as catalysts for long-term change, ensuring that schools become safe, inclusive, and empowering environments for all students.

Joint Monitoring and Support Provision

We conducted joint monitoring and support supervision from July 20 -21, 2026 at Degan and Gerado in collaboration with key stakeholders, including IDP parents, committees, community representatives, CBOs, NGOs, and government sector offices. This inclusive approach ensured that diverse perspectives were incorporated into the monitoring process, reinforcing accountability and collective responsibility. The main objectives of the joint monitoring were: Assess Implementation Status: To evaluate the progress and quality of SYGE’s activities on SGBV prevention, response, and related interventions at Degan and Gerado IDP sites, ensuring that agreements, trainings, and awareness programs are being implemented as planned. Strengthen Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration: To foster coordinated engagement among IDP committees, parents, communities, religious leaders, education offices, women & children affairs, DRM structures, CBOs, and NGOs, thereby reinforcing collective responsibility in addressing IDP needs and sustaining project outcomes. Promote Accountability and Learning:To establish a transparent monitoring framework that documents findings, shares lessons learned, and provides actionable recommendations for improving service delivery, community participation, and institutional accountability across both sites. Key Observations During the supervision, the team conducted site visits to the IDP centers and surrounding schools. The following critical issues were observed: Shelter conditions: The shelters were poorly constructed, overcrowded, and unsafe. In some cases, more than 90 individuals were concentrated in a single room, creating SGBV prevalence, serious health and protection risks. Basic services: IDP parents and community members raised urgent concerns regarding the lack of adequate food, clean water, and electricity, which directly affects their safety, dignity, and wellbeing. Protection risks: The poor living conditions increase vulnerability to SGBV and other forms of exploitation, underscoring the need for immediate multi-sectoral intervention. Consensus and Way Forward The monitoring team reached a shared understanding that SGBV is a multi-sectoral issue requiring strong collaboration among all stakeholders. Effective prevention and response cannot be achieved by a single actor; it demands coordinated action across government institutions, community structures, and humanitarian partners. The team emphasized the importance of: Strengthening community-based protection mechanisms. Enhancing government accountability and service delivery. Mobilizing NGOs and CBOs to provide targeted support. Ensuring youth and women’s active participation in awareness and advocacy efforts. In conclusion, while progress has been made in implementing SGBV-related interventions, the monitoring exercise underscores that urgent, coordinated, and multi-sectoral responses are essential to address the structural vulnerabilities of IDPs. The findings will serve as a foundation for refining strategies, mobilizing resources, and ensuring that future interventions are responsive, inclusive, and impactful.
