Communication and Message Development Training Strengthens School-Based SGBV Prevention

September 17, 2021

Addis Ababa — As part of the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Prevention Project funded by UNFPA, SYGE conducted a communication and message development training for gender club coordinators, mini-media club coordinators, and selected mini-media club student members from targeted schools.

The training was designed to strengthen participants’ knowledge and practical skills in developing clear, accurate, and engaging messages on SGBV prevention. Participants explored effective communication approaches and learned how to develop messages that are appropriate for students and relevant to their school communities.

The involvement of both teachers and students was intended to strengthen school-based communication and encourage young people to take an active role in raising awareness among their peers. Trained participants can use school gender clubs and mini-media platforms to disseminate prevention messages and promote positive attitudes toward gender equality, respect, and protection.

The training also strengthened the capacity of school clubs to serve as platforms for student participation and peer education. Through school announcements, mini-media activities, awareness campaigns, and other communication channels, participants are expected to help extend SGBV prevention messages beyond individual training sessions.

The activity represents an important component of SYGE’s broader efforts to institutionalize SGBV prevention within schools. By equipping coordinators and students with communication and message development skills, the project supports sustainable, student-led awareness initiatives and contributes to creating safer and more inclusive school environments.
