SYGE conducted a tree-planting and seedling distribution campaign at nine targeted schools in Kirkos and Addis Ketema sub-cities as part of the implementation of the “Preventing and Responding to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, Including Harmful Traditional Practices (HTPs), in Ethiopia” project, funded by UNFPA.
The initiative included the distribution of seedlings to intervention schools and the planting of edible trees, combining environmental action with the project’s broader efforts to engage schools and communities in positive, sustainable activities.
The tree-planting campaign was conducted in collaboration with the Addis Ketema Sub-City Education Bureau to strengthen the Green Legacy initiative and encourage students, teachers, and school communities to take part in environmental protection.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the campaign provided an opportunity to bring students and school communities together around shared values of responsibility, participation, and community engagement. The activity also demonstrated how school-based initiatives can contribute to creating healthier and more supportive learning environments.
The distribution and planting of seedlings at the targeted schools are expected to contribute to greener school compounds while encouraging students to develop a sense of environmental stewardship. The edible trees may also provide future nutritional and practical benefits to participating school communities.
Through this initiative, SYGE linked its SGBV and HTP prevention programming with broader community development and environmental activities. The collaboration with the Addis Ketema Sub-City Education Bureau further demonstrated the importance of partnerships in implementing initiatives that benefit schools and surrounding communities.
The campaign reinforces SYGE’s commitment to engaging young people and school communities in activities that promote protection, participation, environmental responsibility, and sustainable community development.
