Addis Ababa — SYGE continues to strengthen community and school-based efforts to prevent and respond to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) through awareness creation, capacity building, stakeholder engagement, and youth-focused interventions.
The organization’s SGBV prevention activities aim to increase awareness of the causes and consequences of violence while promoting gender equality, respect, protection, and collective responsibility. Through community discussions, school-based training, edutainment activities, gender clubs, and public awareness campaigns, SYGE works to ensure that women, girls, young people, and other vulnerable community members have access to information and support.
A key component of the approach is prevention through awareness and empowerment. Students and community members are encouraged to recognize harmful behaviors, challenge discriminatory social norms, and understand the importance of speaking out against violence. School gender clubs and peer-led activities provide young people with opportunities to become active advocates for safer and more inclusive environments.
SYGE also emphasizes the importance of strengthening response and referral mechanisms. Stakeholder discussions and capacity-building activities help improve coordination among schools, communities, government institutions, and other service providers so that individuals affected by SGBV can be connected with appropriate protection and support services.
The organization’s integrated approach recognizes that preventing SGBV requires sustained collaboration among communities, schools, government institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners. By bringing these actors together, SYGE seeks to strengthen community ownership and promote long-term change.
Through its continued interventions, SYGE remains committed to contributing to communities where women and girls can live, learn, and work in environments free from violence, discrimination, and harmful practices.
