A combined life skills and drug and substance abuse prevention training was conducted at Addis Ketema Secondary School to strengthen students’ knowledge, skills, and awareness on issues affecting their well-being and personal development.
The training provided students with practical life skills, including effective communication, decision-making, problem-solving, self-confidence, and positive peer relationships. These skills are intended to help young people make informed choices and respond constructively to challenges they may encounter in their daily lives.
The substance abuse prevention component focused on increasing students’ understanding of the risks and consequences associated with drug and substance use. Participants discussed factors that can contribute to substance abuse, prevention strategies, peer influence, and the importance of seeking appropriate support when facing challenges.
Through interactive discussions and participatory learning, the training encouraged students to become more aware of their choices and to promote healthy behaviors among their peers. The activity also reinforced the role of schools as important platforms for prevention, awareness, and youth empowerment.
The training forms part of SYGE’s broader efforts to strengthen school-based interventions that promote healthy, safe, and supportive environments for young people.
